The Bharat Heavy Electricals limited (BHEl) Haridwar on Wednesday joined the elite club of engineering companies with the successful manufacturing and dispatch of the country’s first indigenously manufactured 800 MW Turbo Generator.
Director (ER&D) TN Veeraraghvan and Executive Director (HEEP) Prakash Chand formally dispatched the generator by waving the ceremonial green flag. Executive director (CFFP) NR Edkie, all the general managers, senior officials and workers of BHEl and representatives of various unions-associations were present on the occasion.
The state-of-the-art generator is being supplied for the Yeramarus Thermal Power Project of Karnataka Power Corporation at Raichur. TN Veeraraghvan congratulated all the employees of BHEl for this engineering achievement and said that our country’s capability to make supercritical thermal sets has been further enhanced.
Prakash Chand, describing it as a major step towards our PM’s vision of “Make in India”, said that the supercritical generator required high level of precision and craftsmanship for its manufacture. He attributed this success to BHEl’s dedicated and skilled workforce.
It is worth noting that BHEl Haridwar is already manufacturing and supplying supercritical turbines and generators of 660 MW, 700 MW and above. GM (electrical machines) Anil Kapoor said that this was the largest capacity generator ever made in India and used steel hollow conductors in place of copper conductors. GM (logisitcs) Rajeev Bhatnagar informed that this 800 MW generator was capable of supplying electricity to about 6 lakh homes.
With the successful dispatch of the generator, a new benchmark has been set by BHEl Haridwar with respect to indigenous manufacture of thermal sets with supercritical parameters. The facility for assembly and testing of this series of generators has been designed and engineered in-house at BHEl’s Haridwar plant. Notably, the new facility has the capability to manufacture and test turbo generators of up to 1000 MW rating.
