BEd-TET federation splits over primary teachers' selection

Published on:

The Federation of bachelor of Education (B.Ed), Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) qualified unemployed youths has split on issue of the criterion to be adopted for selection of the primary teachers in the state. While one faction is advocating for adoption of year wise seniority policy the other one is pitching for merit as the criteria for selecting the teachers.

There are more than 25000 B.Ed./ TET qualified unemployed youths in the state. These youths are on a path of agitation for recruitment in the government primary schools of the state. The state Education Department initiated recruitment process for 1891 posts of primary teachers. The department later added 96, 800 and 389 more posts under backlog quota in this recruitment drive. The drive was however challenged in the High Court which stayed the recruitment process.

The normal practice in the recruitment of primary teachers in the state is to prepare a year wise merit list in which the candidates doing B.Ed earlier are preferred over the ones who did it later.  To prepare the merit of candidates doing B.Ed in the same year the marks of X , XII, Graduation and TET are considered. Some youths are challenging this method and are advocating for a procedure where a combined merit list of all the applicants is prepared and the emphasis on year wise seniority of doing B.Ed is done away with.

These youths have formed a B.Ed/ TET Merit Federation. The president of this section Surendra Chauhan said that thousands of youths would be out rightly eliminated from the recruitment process by adopting method of year wise seniority. He said that his federation would put their case before the bench of High Court when this matter comes up for hearing.

The General Secretary of B.ED/ TET federation Amit Kashyap however denied any rift in the federation. He said that some people are misguiding the students on the issue. Kashyap said that the matter is slated to come up in the HC on August 12 and hoped that the ruling would come in their favour.

National Council of Teacher Education has clearly directed that the posts of the primary teachers should be filled only by the Diploma in Elementary Education  qualified candidates.
