A 20-year old Bangladeshi national who was caught by Ardh Kumbh Mela police on Thursday night was sent to jail on Friday after he was produced in the local court. The youth was unable to explain why he was there. He was stammering when asked questions by police. He could  not either produce the immigration documents like passport and identity card when asked. The police nabbed him under the Passport Act, it is learnt.

On Thursday night, this Bangladeshi national was found roaming around Tulsi Chowk in Mayapur area from where he was arrested by Ardh Kumbh mela police. This illegal migrant had come to Haridwar the same day by train, police said. After interrogation,  he was produced before the court and subsequently, he was sent to judicial custody.

Speaking to The Pioneer, SHO Haridwar police station Mahendra Singh Negi said, “The accused has been identified as Amran (Imran).  He  had come India with his friends about 25 days ago after crossing the border. He hails from Fatehpur thana of lakhimpura in Bangladesh and his father’s name as told by him is Anwar. He got separated from his companions and reached Haridwar, he said during interrogation. A case was registered against him and he was later produced before the court. He did not know Hindi. So we had to hire a bi-linguist to communicate with him.”

Notably, three Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested earlier in the beginning of this month from Roorkee. Many illegal migrants of Bangaldesh are living in Haridwar, police said. Most of them are rag pickers while  some are working as construction labourers across  the district, police added.
