In order to promote sports in police department as well as in the state, around 10 youths should be included in police department each year through sports quota system, said DGP MA Ganapathy on Wednesday.
Young sportsmen have not been recruited through sports quota since 2011 in the police department, he said, adding that they had to conform to the court’s guidelines limiting reservation up to 50 per cent.
He requested the Chief Minister Harish Rawat to create provision for ex-cadre for sportsmen in police department. This would help the police department to have pool of sports players, representing Uttarakhand at national and international level sports events, the state’s top cop said.
He said the people being divided on many issues, sports play a cementing role, uniting all. “This is the beauty of sports,” he said “Our country can perform well in the Olympics and the like if we can provide the sportsmen with the right infrastructure, adequate coaching facilities, required technical and scientific support and college/university scholarship for the players,” he added.
He stressed on around 10 sportsmen be included in police department each year. “This is what I requested the Chief Minister Harish Rawat to provide for. I am happy that the CM has asked me to send to him a proposal for the same,” he said.
