The Army authorities are turning to technology to ease the cumbersome process of recruitment of jawans.  The Army has invited online applications for the recruitment rally for candidates of Garhwal division in which 33,007 candidates have applied. The recruitment rally for the candidates of Haridwar district was held at Mahendra Ground located at Garhi cant here on Thursday.

In a novel method the army is recruiting the Jawans by seeking online application forms from them for Garhwal Rifles (GR) lansdowne. The candidates are issued bar coded admit cards which are checked at the entry point of the rally.

The Director of Recruitment board GR lansdowne, Colonel B M S Talwar told The Pioneer that by adopting the  new method the army and the district administration are aware about the exact number of candidates who would arrive for the rally which makes it easy to make preparation accordingly. He said that on Thursday 2055 candidates of Haridwar district participated in the recruitment rally out of which 313 were rejected at the pre height check. Talwar said that 1742 candidates ran the 1.6 KM qualifying run in which 372 completed the race in the stipulated time.

It is worth mentioning here that the recruitment process of a Jawan consists of two parts, the first one is initial screening which includes a rigorous physical and medical examination and in second part a written examination called Common Entrance Examination (CEE) of the screened candidates is taken.

In the physical screening process the candidates are put through a 1.6 km run which they have to complete in a stipulated time period. The candidates are then asked to clear a hurdle of 9 feet ditch and pass through a zig zag obstacle. A separate independent team then examines the candidates’ height, weight and chest measurements.  The candidate who is not satisfied with his measurement can lodge his complaint at the ‘grievance cell’.  The candidates then pass through a detailed medical examination which is performed by team of trained medical officers.
