The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun’s (MCD) move to make the State’s provisional Capital polythene-free is achieving some results, claim the officials. The MCD is taking strict actions against those who are still using polythene bags.

According to deputy municipal commissioner Rohitash Sharma the MCD has so far collected about Rs nine lakh in penalties this year from those caught using the banned polythene bags. He further informed that two flower vendors were caught using polythene bags on Wednesday. He said that Rs  500 each was imposed as fine on them. “We seized 66 polythene bags from a shopkeeper at Hanuman Chowk earlier this month. A total of Rs 33,000 was collected from him as penalty,” said Sharma.

He further informed that the MCD team is working towards spreading the word among the public on a daily basis. The corporation will continue taking actions against those people who are not abiding by the guidelines.

“The MCD under the leadership of the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’, has conducted many meetings against the use of polythene bags. A human chain was also formed to spread awareness about it. Now we are taking actions against the people who are still using the banned polythene bags. Our team is taking strict actions now be it a buyer or a seller,” he added.

Sharma further said that after all these efforts which the team is putting, people have started to understand the harmful effects of polythene bags and are supporting the authorities in this effort.

“There are places where people are following the orders religiously. We didn’t find anyone using polythene bags many a time when we went for a sudden check,” he added.
