Anganwadi workers association has threatened to start a hunger strike from July 25 to press for their demands.
Addressing a press conference the President of the association Rekha Negi said that the State Government gave a written acceptance of the demands of the agitating workers of the association in the year 2012 but the Government backtracked causing resentment among thousands of anganwadi workers, helpers and mini anganwadi workers.
She said that repeated pleas of the poor workers have fallen on the deaf ears due to which the association was forced to start an agitation. The State wise Dharna and work boycott of anganwadi workers entered 31 day on Thursday. The President claimed that the State Government is harassing the leaders of the association and threatened that the agitated workers can take any extreme step, for which the State Government would solely be responsible.
The general secretary of the association Sushila Khatri said that she would start a fast un to death if the demands of the hapless anganwadi workers are not accepted soon. The members of the association said that they are now committed to fight till all their demands are accepted by the State Government.
They claimed that 40000 anganwadi workers would go on hunger strike in small towns and villages unless the State Government changes its indifferent attitude towards the workers.
The anganwadi workers are demanding that the State Government should give them a status of Government employee and increase their monthly stipend to Rs15000 per month from the present Rs5500.
