Advocates led by Uttaranchal Manav Adhikar Association State secretary Alok Ghildiyal met Dehradun district magistrate BVRC Purushottam and sought action against those encroaching on roads and riverbeds in the city.
Stringent action needs to be taken against law violators, they added. The members requested the DM to issue order for removal of carts used by vendors from roads where they are causing traffic congestion. Ghildiyal said that encroachment on government lands has been increasing in Dehradun since the inception of the State.
"People encroach on roads, riverbeds, forests and other government properties in different parts of the city as department officials do not act as per law of the land," he added.
The department officials who are supposed to take action against those encroaching on roads and other government properties take bribes from them, he alleged. The officials also take bribes from the encroachers at the time of encroachment and then later by threatening to demolish the encroachment.
Due to rampant corruption, cases related to encroachment of lands have been increasing in the city. "Crores of rupees have been spent by the government in the name of widening of roads in different parts of the city, but officials failed to meet the government standards.Free left turn at crossings has not been implemented by the administration. Vendors selling vegetables and fruits park their carts on important roads of the city causing traffic congestion. The administration should act against such anomalies," he demanded.
In Dharampur, vegetable vendors have erected their shops without procuring license from the department concerned. He requested the DM to order for the removal of the carts from these places.
