Acute staff shortage hits MCD functioning hard

Published on:

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is facing acute staff shortage which is negatively affecting the functioning of the corporation.

The MCD officials fail to supervise and monitor the works in many areas of the city due to the insufficient number of employees, said the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari (MNA) Ashok Kumar.

Currently, MCD has only two sanitation inspectors (SI) who hold the responsibility of monitoring the sanitation level of the State capital.

At least 15 SIs should be appointed at MCD to improve the worsening sanitation level in the town, added Kumar. MCD is also lacking Chief Sanitation Inspector (CSI) and Zonal Officers. Minimum six CSIs and four ZOs should be appointed at the MCD, stated Kumar.

leader of opposition at MCD, Neenu Sehgal informed that multitasking is becoming a norm at MCD.

Many officers are given dual charges which is affecting their work efficiency.

He stated that senior city health officer Dr RK Singh and Executive Engineer, Ravi Pandey have been given multiple responsibilities which is resulting into regular delays in several works.

Sehgal said that MCD has failed to employ the minimum number of staff.

There is only one Tax Inspector (TI), who is holding the major responsibility of tax department whereas there should be at least two TIs in the department.

He also added that no new recruitments are being done at MCD after the retirement of its employees. He said that there is no in-charge or officer to monitor the workshops conducted by the MCD.

He said that at least one additional MNA level officer and an executive engineer should be appointed in all the five departments of the MCD.

Sehgal said that MCD has no assistant engineer whereas it should have at least four assistant engineers.

There is no IT officer at MCD which is affecting the technical tasks of the corporation.

Meanwhile, MNA, Kumar stated that he had already communicated the staff shortage issues to the Government but no action has been taken yet.

When asked about the multitasking done at MCD, Kumar said, "We can’t oppose the instructions of the state government and can’t do any reform in the multitasking without permission from the State administration."
