Acting on the directions of National Green Tribunal, the district administration is all set to swing into action in conjunction with the Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) against about 125 hotels and Ashrams marked by the UEPPCB in the previous year as polluting Ganga by draining their waste directly into the river. A joint team has been formed by district administration and UEPPCB.
The NGT had issued an order in July 2016, stating that sewage treatment plant was mandatory for hotels and Dharmshalas having more than 20 rooms. However, in spite of the notices slapped by UEPPCB, these errant hotels are yet to implement the norms fixed by NGT. In October 2016, the UEPPCB had sent a list of 125 such hotels and Dharmshalas to NGT.
Speaking to The Pioneer on Tuesday, district magistrate Harbans Singh Chugh said, “A joint team has been formed which would soon start the survey. Based on the findings, strict action would be taken against the violators,” he averred.
