ABVP, BJP’s student wing, made a clean sweep of three important posts up for grabs — president, treasurer and university representative — in the students’ union election held at HNB Garhwal Central University Pauri Campus. However, significantly, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal’s student wing Uttarakhand Student Federation has sprung a surprise with its candidate being elected secretary of the union.
The Congress’s student affiliate, NSUI has drawn a blank.
Shalini Patwal and Radha Khatri were elected vice-president and joint secretary respectively unopposed.
The students went to the ballots on Wednesday and the result was declared late that evening.
Garhwal Central University Pauri campus’s chief election officer KC Purohit said that Gaurav Rawat (ABVP) had defeated Gaurav Sagar (NSUI) by a margin of 115 votes in the election for the post of president in a straight contest.
Gaurav Rawat had got 633 votes while Gaurav Sagar could manage 518 votes.
Uttarakhand Student Federation candidate, Shubham Rawat, defeated Rajat Singh by 132 votes for the post of secretary.
Deepak Goddiyal (ABVP) had been elected for the post of treasurer by defeating Yamni Rawat (NSUI).
Deepak had got 632 votes while Yamni was content with 512 votes.
Ankit Tariyal (ABVP) was elected university representative by defeating Pawan Negi by the margin of 280 votes.
Out of the total 1644 voters, 1158 had cast their votes in the election and the poll percentage was 70.4 percent, according to Prof Purohit.
He claimed that the Pauri campus student’s union election had been conducted peacefully.
Fool-proof security arrangements had been made during the polling till the result was announced, he said.
Purohit further said that the oath to the elected students’ union candidates, including vice-president and joint secretary who had been elected unopposed, was administered just after the result of election was announced.
There will be no oath-taking ceremony of the Pauri Campus student’s union now, he said.
However, the elected students can stage an inaugural ceremony, he added.
