The Akhil Bharatiya Vidharthy Parishad (ABVP) has won the presidential post of the DAV (PG) College students union for the tenth consecutive year.

Its candidate, Rahul Kumar won by 10 votes. However, Satyam Group candidate Kapil Sharma won the post of general secretary. Counting of the votes polled in the students’ union election was held on Saturday amidst tight security.

Around 100 college staff members were deployed as the counting officers at the behest of the college election officer Gopal Kshetri.

In a high turnout as compared to many other colleges in Dehradun, around 52 per cent of the voters had cast votes in the students' union election in DAV (PG) College held on Friday. The counting of votes began at 9 pm and results were declared by 4 pm.

ABVP candidate Rahul Kumar defeated his rival Sanjay Tomar, an independent candidate. In the initial phases of the counting, Tomar took a lead. However, ABVP candidate finally forged ahead. As the final result came out, he just scraped through with the victory margin being a razor thin one of just 10 votes. National Students Union of India (NSUI) candidate stood third in the poll.

Rahul secured 1576 votes while Sanjay got 1566 votes. NSUI candidate Ayush Tomar got 1151 votes.

To ensure peaceful counting of votes, police had made elaborate security arrangements for the counting venue as well as outside the college campus. However, on the other side of the picture, police erecting barricades at the crossings resulted in traffic snarl that inconvenienced the commuters.

Amid tight security, victory rallies were allowed for the triumphant candidates, but they were stopped by police at Survey Chowk.  No rally was allowed within the college campus.
