ABVP, Aryan group hold rally in DAV college, flout lyngdoh panel norms

Published on:

Hundreds of supporters of ABVP and Aryan Group took out rallies in the DAV (PG) College on Saturday shouting slogans in favour of the respective unions and their candidates.

The supporters burst crackers and entered the college campus, dancing to drum beats in a blatant violation of lyngdoh Committee recommendations for the students’ union election. Students’ groups used all the possible means to gather maximum number of youths in the rallies. The students’ groups were reported to have spent lakhs for arranging food and buses for their supporters, hailing from various parts of the State that resulted in traffic congestions at various crossings, causing inconvenience to the commuters in the State capital.

There are reasons to believe that some outsiders had participated in the rally, again in violation of the norms envisaged by lyngdoh. The college teaching staff was found collecting election material from the supporters.

The election officers and police remained mute spectators. The administration had made elaborate security arrangements to avoid untoward incidents in the college campus. Police officers, including SP City, inspectors, sub-inspectors, constables, lady constables, were deployed in the college for peaceful completion of the nomination process.

A total of 21 candidates have filed nomination for the various posts of president, vice president, secretary, joint secretary, treasurer, university representative and executive members of students’ union election in the college. The polling will be held on September 10 and counting of votes will be held on September 11. Keen contest is expected for two posts —president and general secretary in the students’ union election.
