Kotdwar police on Monday rescued the 19-year-old girl of village Bhawar who was allegedly abducted and also arrested the alleged abductor, identified as Sarfaraj. While the girl was handed over to her parents the accused was produced before a local court from where he was sent to jail under judicial custody.

However, two other accused in the alleged abduction case have been relieved after the girl revealed that both Imran and Akbar had no role in the abduction.

The police have included the Section of rape and SC-ST Act against the accused after the girl was interrogated.

Senior Superintendent of Police Jagat Ram Joshi said police had traced both the girl and the abductor near a railway station on Saturday morning. “The accused was produced in Kotdwar court the same day and the sent him to jail under judicial custody.

The names of two other accused were deleted from the list following interrogation of the girl. She was later handed over to her parents,” he added.

Police acted after the mother of the girl, Mamta Devi had lodged a report in the police station against three persons - Sarfaraj, Imran and Akbar, all natives of Bihar. Sarfaraj, 28, was the main accused according to the report lodged while Imran and Akbar were said to have assisted him in the crime. Noteworthy, the head constable Ran Bahadur was suspended by SSP Joshi for dithering on lodging the complaint of the mother of the allegedly kidnapped girl.

While Mamta Devi went twice to the police station on October 7 and 9 the report was finally  registered on October 10.
