A Government-run co-education school in Roorkee has got six toilets after an incredibly long span of 56 years since its construction. Under the Swach Bharat Abhiyan initiated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rotary Club of Roorkee has built six toilets in CBRI junior high school, ending  the dragging ordeal of the students.

Former president of Rotary Club of Roorkee and present district coordinator of Rotary International Swach Bharat Abhiyan, Satyendra Mittal told The Pioneer that he had asked some industrialists to undertake the project. “It was a joint endeavour. Being an engineer, I have some links with the engineering companies. I requested Subhash Infra Engineers Company to do this noble work. With their financial assistance and also with the assistance of an engineer from Public Works Department S K Rai, we managed to build six toilets for the students. We are happy  having done  a bit to fulfill the collective  dream of the nation,” said Mittal.

It is learnt  that Central Building Research Institute director Yagvendra Pandey helped in connecting the toilets with the sewer lines. Besides,  the water amenities were also facilitated at his instance.

The principal of the school Vijaypal Singh is all smiles with the newly built facilities. He says, “The long- term planning bore fruit with the Rotary Club taking the initiative. The girls are especially relieved having the facility.”

A class 9 student Mala from Bhagwanpur says, “Most of the time, we used to wait for other friends as we went together to the toilet located outside the school. They were not sanitised properly and while using unclean utilities, many of us used to have urinary infection. We then started going to the fields to ease ourselves. Now, our juniors would enjoy comfortable study period in the school with no hassles for getting the toilet facility. We had a tough time though.”
