The doctors at Max Super Specialty hospital saved life of an 80-year-old man suffering from bleeding arteries of lungs caused due to an accident.
The patient was admitted in the hospital with the complaints of massive bleeding from the lungs which lasted for five days after a fall. The fall also induced a fracture in his right hip. The Interventional radiologist of the hospital, Dr Shireesh Mittal said that the aged patient was diagnosed with bronchial artery bleed induced by the fall.
The condition of the patient was critical and the team of doctors identified the bleeding zone through X- ray and managed to close the bleeding by a complex surgical process. “By dedicated efforts we managed to close the eroded artery and the leaking fistula. Just after the procedure when the patient regained consciousness, his sputum color turned white with no blood staining. The patient stayed in the ICU for three days for complete recovery. later he was taken up for Hip replacement (Hiparthroplasty) which was also successful,” Dr Mittal informed.
He further added that massive bleeding from lungs (haemoptysis) is medical emergency where timely diagnosis and therapeutic Embolisation can be lifesaving as happened in this case. He said that the management requires urgent steps to achieve hemodynamic stability of the patient, diagnose the cause for bleeding followed by suitable measures to treat the identified pathology. Dr Mittal said that an effective method to control massive bleeding from a bronchial artery is Embolotherapy which is a modern method of treatment carries a low recurrence rate and greatly reduced mortality rate among severely ill patients.
