From November 18, six vegetable outlets will be opened in different areas of the city where potatoes and onions will be available to the public at wholesale rates.

This decision was taken in a meeting presided over by the District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam regarding the consistent rise in the prices of vegetables like onion, potato and tomato in the State capital. The District Magistrate said that as the price of vegetables especially potatoes and onions are raising consistently, on Friday a meeting was conducted so that a proper solution could be worked out.

He said that from Monday onwards six vegetables outlets in Government fair price shops in six different areas including Jakhan, Race Course, Ballupur, Rajeevnagar, Jogiwala and Mokhampur will be opened and one can buy potato and onion at wholesale rate-for Rs 18-20 per kg for potato and Rs  40-45 per kg for onion.

The availability of these vegetables in the outlets will be as per the demand of the customers. He stated that price of tomato is also increasing but as it is a perishable item it cannot be stored in these shops. These outlets will be open till the rates of vegetables normalise, he added. Secretary of Mandi Samiti Dehradun Vijay Prasad Thapliyal said that wholesalers have decided to sell onion, potato and tomato to the retail customers. Potatoes will be sold for Rs 18-20 per kg, onion for Rs 40-45 per kg and tomatoes for Rs 35-40 per kg.

Earlier, they were selling vegetables to the retailers only, but now they will also sell these vegetables to the customers at wholesale rates. It is worth mentioning here that the spiralling rates of vegetables had caused much inconvenience to the public and disrupted the domestic budget of families in the State capital. Onions are presently being sold for more than Rs 60 per kg while tomatoes too are being sold for more than Rs 60 per kg. The price of potatoes had risen to Rs 30 per kg in Dehradun.
