The issue of 400 percent increase in fee of MBBS courses by management of the SGRR medical college triggered protest from all quarters in the State. This college increased the fee from about Rs 4 lakh a year to Rs 19 lakh for the MBBS course offered by it. The State Government’s initial stand on the issue fuelled the protest further. The Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat appeared to defend the fees hike initially when he said that investors spend Crores of rupees to set up infrastructure and other facilities and they should be allowed to decide their fees. However on very next day he directed the university concerned to take back the fee hike which he termed unacceptable. The clarification by the state government on Monday however cleared the confusion on the issue. It is worth mentioning here that the Supreme Court (SC) in a landmark decision had directed in the year 2006 that a Fee Fixation Committee headed by a retired judge of High Court (HC) should be constituted in every state and this committee should decided the fee structure of private medical colleges. In Uttarakhand also this committee used to decide the fee of three private medical colleges of the state and the government’s stand is also clear now that this committee only will decide the fees of medical education courses.
