The education department is gearing itself to promote 350 Primary Teachers to the lecturer Teacher (lT) cadre to fulfill the vacant positions of these teachers in the Government junior high schools and Inter colleges of the State.

The education department sources revealed that the department has asked the Additional Directors of Garhwal and Kumaon to start the process of short listing the teachers of the primary schools for promotion to the lT cadre. The department has 1300 vacant posts of the lT in the schools of the state and as per the rule of the department 30 percent of these positions should be filled by departmental promotions. The department has already initiated an internal recruitment drive for filling the remaining 950 posts of lT for which the department would conduct a written examination.

The sources informed that the education department wanted to fill the vacant posts of lT by declaring 1500 posts of lT cadre as surplus. The department was planning to send these surplus teachers in the schools which are facing the staff crunch. It is worth mentioning here that the department ungraded many schools in the state to the Junior High School and Inter College which caused vacancy for large number of lT teachers.  The move of the department to declare surplus lT posts was met by a stiff opposition from the teacher organization the ‘Rajkeeya Shikshak Sangh’ (RSS). The teacher organization threatened to launch an agitation if the department goes ahead with its plan to declare the lT posts as surplus.
