The breast and endocrine surgeon of Mahant Indresh Hospital, Dr Neelkamal Kumar, carried out a marathon eight-hour long operation and successfully removed a 3.5 kg tumour from the neck of a woman. The woman was suffering from a rare and highly malignant type of cancer which is referred to as Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer in medical jargon.

According to the hospital authorities, 55 years old Gita Devi (changed name), a resident of Dehradun, was suffering from Neck Cancer (Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer) for a long time.  The doctors were reluctant to operate her due to the size of her tumor as it could cost her voice. Dr Neelkamal was not only successful in removing her tumour but also saved her voice. There was a big thyroid cancer in the neck of the patient because of which the patient was experiencing serious difficulty in breathing due to the enormity of her tumor. The breathing pipe of the patient also started eroding due to the illness. The hospital authorities claim that some part of the flesh of the neck of the patient was hanging inside the lung which was posing a problem in the breathing of the patient. During the marathon operation, the eroded breathing pipe of the neck was repaired and a tumour weighing as much as 3.5 kg was removed.

Dr Neelkamal Kumar said that any carelessness towards the Anaplastic Thyroid cancer can be life threatening. “Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer is the most dreaded, highly malignant and rare type of cancer. The unique characteristic with this tumour is that it doubles or triples its size within a day and causes significant air problem leading to the death of the patient ,a  patient affected by it is able to live only for up to three months only. But after the successful operation, the life is increased to a lot extent. The patient is very much benefited by the operation. After operation, there is guarantee that the patient will never die of suffocation.” he said .
