Volunteers participated in the 34th cleaning drive along the Ganga under the banner of the Ma Ganga Ahwan Akhada. led by coordinator Rameshwar Gaud, the volunteers cleaned the Subhash Ghat in Haridwar on Thursday.
While speaking on need to raise public awareness on cleaning of the Ganga, the coordinator stressed on the need for collective effort to prevent further pollution of the Ganga and on need for contribution towards cleaning of the river.
People from all sections of society including politicians and social workers will also have to do their bit towards cleaning the Ganga in order to further raise awareness on this issue, said Gaud.
Addressing the disciples and followers of various personalities of the religious fraternity in Haridwar, the campaign coordinator exhorted them to themselves undertake or participate in collective Ganga cleaning drives whenever they are able to find time for it.
He said, "The importance of the Ganga river is not restricted to one religion as the river is important for all. Since there is little water in the Ganga at present, the dried banks along the bathing ghats are now littered with various trash items like old clothes, polythene bags and other garbage. This is the time for all of us to do our bit and clean this mess because the Ganga does not differentiate among us," he said.
Expressing his gratitude to the volunteers who participated in the clean up activity at Subhash Ghat on Thursday, Gaud said that the drive will be continued and exhorted them to offer voluntary labour whenever they find the time for it in order to clean the Ganga. Monu Tomar of the Bhagirathi small vendors' welfare committee, Rodibelwala, Haridwar, and others were among those present on the occasion.
