leading and upcoming researchers from across the world are slated to attend the 30th Himalaya-Karakoram-Tibet (HKT) workshop being organised by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) from October 6 to 8 at its premises. Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul will be the chief guest at the inauguration which will be presided over by the Union minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, YS Chowdary.
While WIHG director Anil Gupta is chairman of the organising committee of the 30th HKT, Rajesh Sharma is coordinating the workshop. Sharma informed that about 250 participants including about 52 from foreign countries will participate in the 30th HKT. Thematic oral and poster sessions will be held on eight proposed thematic sessions apart from which two special sessions on the extreme events like floods and on the recent Nepal earthquake are also slated to be held.
Started at leicester University, United Kingdom in 1985 as a forum for all active workers in the region, the HKT is held annually at different countries and is said to be the single most important meeting for active geo-scientists in the central and South Asian regions. Since 1985, the HKT workshop has contributed to the researchers of the India-Asia collision system providing a platform for field based-style discussion with other colleagues across the globe working in the region. This meeting provides important integrated data set for complete understanding of Himalaya- Karakoram- Tibet land mass evolution on a single platform at different time scale to the Indian Himalayan geo-scientists especially for young researchers. The available state-of-the art work done so far and gaps in the selected themes will be debated and discussed.
