The woes of inmates of the Nari Niketan shelter home seem to be continuing with three more inmates being admitted to the Doon Hospital after falling sick on Thursday. The number of such ill inmates admitted in the Doon Hospital has now reached 26.
They are being kept under medical observation, said Social Welfare additional secretary Manoj Chandran. Though the condition of the three inmates was not serious they were admitted in the hospital to avoid any health risk, he stressed.
The additional secretary informed that all the inmates of the Dehradun Nari Niketan will be administered a medical check up with five of them undergoing the check up on Thursday. The psychological assessment of the inmates will also be conducted in a phased manner in the Doon Hospital. Air conditioner-cum-heater was installed in one of the Nari Niketan rooms on Thursday while fire safety equipment will be also be provided in the coming days, he added.
Chandran said that one of the inmates was handed over to her family living in Ranikhet, Almora on Thursday after completion of due procedure. Moreover, three more inmates including two from Bangladesh and one from Burma will also be handed over to their family members. As part of departmental procedure, Dehradun additional district magistrate (finance) Jharna Kamthan reached shelter home on Thursday and recorded the statements of these three inmates.
It is pertinent to mention here that a special investigation team headed by superintendent of police (City) Ajay Singh is probing the irregularities in Nari Niketan where a hearing and speech impaired inmate was allegedly raped and made to undergo an abortion. Two inmates had also died in a span of just three days recently while more than a score of them had become unwell.
The alleged irregularities are also being investigated into by the committee formed on Dehradun district magistrate Ravi Nath Raman’s instructions. This committee is headed by the ADM (Finance) with the chief medical officer and social welfare officer as its members.
