3 months passed, murder case of RTI activist still unsolved

The regular police have not yet solved the murder case of RTI activist Gajpal Singh, although the case was transferred from revenue police to regular police over three months ago.

The murder case of RTI activist was transferred from revenue police to regular police on 21 August 2014 and two investigation officers were deputed to crack the case.A few days after the transfer of the case, Chandra Mohan, Sub Inspector, Police Kotwali was deputed as second investigation officer in place of the first investigation officer. The police said they are investigating the case from different angles.  However, till now no progress is in sight.

One of the reasons behind the police failing to crack it may be that the case had been handed over to the regular police after 17 days of the incident. Police are finding it difficult to get the proper evidence regarding the murder case. It is possible that much of the evidences were destroyed  in the meantime, sources said.

Although the investigation officer sounded hopeful of  a breakthrough the family members of the deceased have demanded CBI or CID  investigation. Notably, the missing report of Right to Information Activist Gajpal Singh (65), resident of village Kandola in Pauri Tehsil,  was lodged with revenue police on 4 August and his body  was recovered by the revenue police team on 8 August in the forest of Pandali.

Alam Singh, son of the deceased, had alleged that revenue police had not been serious about the case and demanded it be transferred from revenue police to regular police. Pauri District Magistrate Chandra Shekhar had transferred the murder case to regular police 17 days after the murder.

Sub District Magistrate P l Shah had told The Pioneer that no report had been lodged by the family members of the deceased against any one. Only the missing report of the RTI activist had been lodged by the family members. On the  basis   of this report, the search team was constituted and the revenue police found the body of RTI activist in the forest of Pandali. Shah said that suo motto case was registered against unknown persons under section 302, 201 Indian Penal Code.
