A three-day communication workshop to help people suffering from stammering started in State capital on Sunday. The Dehradun chapter of Indian Stammering Association is organizing the workshop. More than 30 individuals from across India are participating in the workshop.
Based in Dehradun the association was started in 2008 by Dr Sachin Srivastava. It is a self help association which conducts regular meetings to assist people who stammer. The association has organised meeting in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi to help in overcoming the associated behaviours and mindset related to stammering, through self-help practices. The association is of the view that there is no medical cure for the condition but societal support and confidence can help individuals combat it to a great extent and slowly the stammering also lessens.
On the opening day of the workshop, the participants were introduced to stammering dealing practices like bouncing and prolongation, on day two, conversations with strangers to overcome the hesitation of public speaking will be initiated for participants.
The participants would also enact a play in a city park. On the day three, interviewing techniques will be taught so that they face interviews without letting stammering become an impediment. later in the day the participants would be asked to give presentations to overcome fear.
