Himachal Pradesh Police has booked a student of MBBS course in Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) for allegedly ragging a junior student. Praveen Negi, a student of final year, has been facing allegations of torturing a junior student Manish Bhargava in the IGMC hostel.
Taking strict action against Praveen, the IGMC administration rusticated him from the college. The case surfaced on Monday, when the warden of the hostel referred the matter to college administration. The victim, Manish was reportedly harassed physically and mentally by the accused in the Raman Medical College Hostel at Sanjauli on Sunday night.
Having conducted preliminary enquiries, Shimla Police on Tuesday booked the accused student under HP Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act,2009.
Sources said after the incident of ragging, the matter had reached police on Sunday night only as the victim student was beaten up by the accused. But the senior students brushed the matter under the carpet by pressing juniors to arrive at a compromise.
IGMC Principal Ashok Sharma, on Monday morning, referred the matter to anti-ragging committee. Having got a report from the anti-ragging committee, he lodged a complaint against the erring student to the police and a case was registered against the accused under relevant section of IPC and provisions of anti-ragging act.
After the college administration sent the matter for enquiry by the anti-ragging committee, Himachal Police on Tuesday registered case against the erring student.
This is not the first case of ragging in IGMC as both the medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh are infamous for incidences of ragging. But this is perhaps the first time in recent past, when the college administration has got an FIR registered against a student involved in ragging.
