Setback for civic body’s claim of clean city
Dehradun: Residents of Dehradun who think that they are doing their bit for the environment by segregating the domestic waste will be disappointed to learn that though there is segregation of waste at the source, the biodegradable and non-biodegradabe waste is dumped together. This was revealed by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun in response to an RTI application filed by Making a Difference (MAD) group. The group had submitted an RTI application seeking information from the MCD on various aspects of solid waste management in the city. However, the reply provided by the corporation was incomplete and comprised of vague terms which did not present a clear picture of the situation. The applicants affirm that they also received phone calls from sanitation staff accusing them of trying to ‘malign’ the MCD. However, MAD later appealed to the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari and he ruled in favour of the group after which it was revealed that the waste in Dehradun is not recycled and that the corporation does not have a policy to assess the work of Doon Valley Waste Management, the company contracted for collecting and disposing garbage.
