MGNREGS funds laptops, sofas!

Clad in a white dhoti with characteristic round-rimmed glasses, Gandhi would not have misused the funds collected in his name for buying laptops and sofa sets.

But Gandhigiri was apparently the last thing on the Punjab Government’s mind when it pulled out approximately Rs40 lakh from MGNREGS for equipping themselves with brain machines and picking up comfy sofa sets.

The Government did not even hesitate to renovate rest houses across Punjab from the funds meant to enhance livelihood security in the rural areas of the State by providing 100 days of guaranteed wage employment to every household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work.

As if this was not enough, Govt made a mockery of the intention behind the welfare scheme by paying the workers after a delay of about two years. All this, and much more, has come out in the latest report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India tabled in the ongoing Budget Session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
