Traffic violations continue to pose hazards on the roads of the State capital. One such problem is the unnecessary use of high beams by four wheeler users which also increases accident risk during the night.
The Regional Transport Office, in its ongoing drive against such violations has penalised nearly 200 vehicle users in Dehradun. Drivers often fail to dip the headlights of their car which dazzles the vision of oncoming vehicle users and increase the risk of accidents. According to the Additional Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) (Enforcement), RP
Rathore, drivers can be witnessed avoiding the proper use of high beam and dipper, which is against the traffic norms and is also among the major causes of road accidents during the night. He added that drivers should strictly follow the rules mentioned in the Motor Vehicle Act according to which drivers while driving with high beam lights must dip t
hem before coming within 200 metres of any oncoming vehicle in order to prevent dazzling the vision of the vehicle user. low beam light must be used if the driver is within 200 metres of the vehicles coming from the opposite direction. Drivers should not look directly into the approaching car’s headlights. When driving through fog at night one should always use low beam lights and fog lights. Keeping the high beam on in such situation is similar to shining lights at a mirror,
he added. In order to encourage safe driving and prevent road mishaps, drivers should be alert to vehicles, particularly darker vehicles, travelling after sunset without their headlights on. Rathore said that the RTO officials have launched a special checking drive for such traffic violators. In the ongoing checking drive about 198 users of various types of vehicles have been penalised and a penalty of Rs 1,000 has also been imposed on each of them.
He said that RTO officials would continue their drive especially during night and would also penalise the heavy goods vehicles’ drivers defying the specified headlight usage norm.
