Around 20 per cent of the students undergoing higher education in India are enrolled at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) which is conducting 540 programmes, said IGNOU regional director Dr Asha Sharma.

In her address at induction meeting held at IGNOU regional centre DAV (PG) College, Dehradun, Dr Sharma stressed on the changing role of IGNOU as per the requirements of the society, industry and the learners. She highlighted the fact that brick and mortar structure cannot be built for increasing the gross enrolment ratio of higher education which is the need of the hour. This can be done through distance education in which IGNOU is the pioneer. According to her, at IGNOU centre, personalised counseling is supplemented by video and audio conferencing. Assistant coordinator Dr Ravi Dixit gave information to all 522 learners about the programme concerned.

On the occasion, DAV (PG) College principal Dr Devendra Bhasin gave tips to the learners for their skill upliftment to enable them to become an asset for the society.

IGNOU Regional Centre coordinator Dr HS Randhawa informed that before the induction meeting, study material was distributed among the students and their educational qualifications were verified. The message of the IGNOU vice chancellor professor Aslam Khan was also projected. Assistant regional director Dr Jagdamba Prasad, assistant coordinators Dr Rakesh Jauhari, Dr VB Chaurasia and others were also present on the occasion.
