Over 20 people have registered themselves in portal recently launched by the Dehradun district administration to support the literacy campaign, Padho Doon Badho Doon.

Recently, the district administration announced its plan to eradicate illiteracy from the district by January 26 and to make this plan successful, the administration has asked people to volunteer to teach the illiterate people in various areas of the district.

As informed by the chief development officer (CDO), Nitika Khandelwal, a survey is currently being conducted in which the administration is trying to identify the total number of illiterate people and so far, about 20,000 people have been found to be illiterate in Dehradun district which includes those who are above the age of 11 years. She stated that the administration has also launched a portal http://dsclservices.org.in/volunteer.php on which anyone can volunteer to teach such people.

She said even students can register themselves in the portal to volunteer to contribute to this campaign. She further informed that there will be maximum five students under one volunteer teacher and he or she will have to give a total of 25 hours in a three-month period. The CDO said the administration understands that it would be difficult for a working person to give fixed time everyday. Therefore, the administration is giving volunteers the liberty to choose and manage their time to teach their students.

“We will give a broad time window to the volunteers besides providing them  space in a school in an area where they can come and teach people as per their schedule by coordinating with others,” added Khandelwal. She also informed that so far, about 21 people have registered to volunteer for this literacy campaign and the classes will begin soon too.
