Two men who had conned a local businessman of Rs22 lakh posing as Enforcement Directorate officials in November last year were arrested on Monday evening. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Sadanand Date revealed this to the media here on Tuesday. The accused have been identified as

Karnal (Haryana) native Dharmpal Bhatiya and Clement Town, Dehradun resident Deepak Manchanda from their respective homes on Monday evening. Earlier, on November 26 the police had arrested two women- Baby and Rakhi who were allegedly involved in this crime, he added. However, police have not yet recovered the stolen money from the accused.

It will be recalled that based on complaint lodged by Dehradun resident Yashpal Tandon, a case was registered in the Kotwali police station under sections 419/420/120b/506/406 of IPC against unidentified persons. The police team led by inspector SS Bisht directed to apprehend the culprits has so far arrested four persons and is pursuing the remaining four accused in the case. The SSP said that during interrogation the two accused nabbed by the police confessed to their crime stating that had committed it to make a quick buck.

Manchanda is the son of one of Tandon’s friends and was working as a collection agent for the businessman. Being a frequent visitor to Tandon’s home Manchanda had the information based on which the crime was committed, though he stayed outside Tandon’s home when the crime was taking place. Bhatiya revealed that as per the plan made by his wife Rekha and her friend Deepak Manchanda, Bhatiya had called Rekha’s brother Pradeep from Delhi to help in the crime.

It will be recalled that at about 8 PM on November 2, eight persons including two women, had visited Tandon’s home in Race Course area posing as ED officers wearing scarves to conceal their faces. They asked Tandon and his family members about their assets in detail claiming that several complaints regarding Tandon’s assets were pending in the ED.

They then searched the house thoroughly for around three hours. They asked the family members to show them where they had kept their cash and jewellery. One of them had threatened Yashpal with arrest on the charge of non-payment of income tax for the assets he possessed. The frauds told the Tandon family that they would receive the official document regarding their estimated assets on the next day and asked Tandon for his car. When he refused, the thugs took away his two-wheeler which was later found abandoned at Kargi Chowk. The criminals took away lakhs of rupees, jewellery and a two-wheeler in all amounting to about `22 lakh.
