A girl student committed suicide by jumping before a speeding train at GTM complex, Mohkampur Railway crossing, Nehru Colony on Thursday. The deceased was identified as 16- year- old Swati Negi, resident of Sadbhawna Colony, Mokhampur. She was studying in Class XI in Central School, IIP, Mohkampur. Sources said she committed suicide after she got involved into an argument with her parents. Her mother chased her a few metres, but she hid herself behind bushes near Mohkampur crossing. She waited for Mussoorie Express to arrive for some time and jumped when the train arrived. She died on the spot, police said.
Informed about the incident by the local residents, police rushed to the site. The body was recovered and sent for postmortem. Nehru Colony sub-inspector S Thapliyal said she had committed suicide around 8.30 am. Family members have not, however, disclosed the reason which forced her to end her life thus.
Psychologists opined that life in once tranquil Dehradun appears to have become more stressful of late, resulting in a marginal increase in suicide cases over the past few years. Teenagers and youth are becoming vulnerable to such tendencies as they are unable to cope with the stress life throws up in the form of academic pressure and resultant disappointments. “They must be taught lessons on accepting failure as a natural part of life. Right counseling by the competent persons is the need of the hour to rid them of the self-destructive propensity,” one of them said.
