16 tonnes of Garbage from Auli wedding reaches waste plant, more expected soon

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is undertaking work on disposal of the garbage generated in the wedding programme organised by South African businessmen Gupta brothers at Auli.

About 16 tonnes of garbage in two compactors has already reached the solid waste management plant situated at Shishambada. Four more compactor-loads of garbage are likely to reach Dehradun soon.

Providing information about this, Ramky company project manager Mohit Dwivedi said, “Nearly 16 tonnes of garbage has reached our waste management plant from Auli and more is likely to come.We are having enough space in our waste management plant so we are not facing any issues regarding the space for the garbage.

The waste management plant has a space for 600 tonnes to be managed in a single day. About 300 tonnes of garbage reaches this plant from Dehradun city in a day.”

It will be recalled that a considerable quantity of garbage was generated by the wedding programme of Atul and Ajay Gupta’s sons at the winter sports destination Auli last month.

Those against holding the wedding there had also approached the high court citing the environmental damage such an event would cause in the environmentally sensitive location.

Not satisfied with the report submitted by the Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) regarding the effects of the event in Auli, the High Court on July 17 had directed the UEPPCB, Chamoli district magistrate and State Government to submit a detailed report within 10 days.
