Dehradun police arrested  a 15-year-old boy who had allegedly killed a two-year-old girl by dumping her in Song river on Tuesday night at Keshavpuri Basti, Doiwala. He was alleged to have abducted her and attempted to sexually molest her. The attempt proving abortive after he heard a police vehicle passing nearby, he threw the child in the river.

Though police, wilting under pressure with such cases occurring at regular intervals, are busy flaunting it as a success the people say the lack of police patrolling and vigilance is what is resulting in the rise in such heinous crimes. Interestingly, Uttarakhand Director-General of Police BS Sidhu announced  a reward of Rs10,000 to the teams tasked with arresting the accused.

A senior police officer said that the baby was allegedly kidnapped by the accused at 2 am on Wednesday while she was sleeping with her mother. With an intention to rape her, he took her to a river bridge around 500 metres away from her home. On hearing police siren approaching, he got panicky and threw her right in the river.  later, he fled. The child drowned, he said.

Waking up in the morning, her mother found her daughter missing. After failing to trace her child, she registered a missing report at 8 am in the Doiwala police station on Wednesday. Police recovered the baby's body from the bank of river Song, at Keshavpuri, at 10 am on Wednesday. The body was sent for post-mortem which later confirmed that she drowned.

The Doiwala police station in-charge and inspector Sandeep Negi said that taking cognisance of the missing diary, a case under section of 302 of IPC was registered in the police station. Teams were formed and they investigated the case. Based on information provided by the deceased's elder sister, a sketch of the accused was prepared. Several suspected persons were interrogated too. Acting on a tip- off, police on Friday arrested the accused who admitted to his offences and narrated the incident. A case under 7/8 Protection of Children from Sexual offences (POCSO) Act, 363, 366a/304/511 of IPC was registered against the accused in the police station Doiwala. The accused was sent to Juvenile Home after being presented in the court, it is learnt.
