Dehradun police have finally acted by arresting the driver a day after a car owned by the father of Khanpur BJP MlA Pranav Singh Champion, Narendra Singh, himself a former MlA, knocked down a 14- year-old Shrinkhal, leaving him critically injured. The arrested driver identified as Shankit, resident of Roorkee, Haridwar, was produced at the court on Thursday.
Notably, Shrinkhal met the accident when he was going for tuition in an area under the jurisdiction of Nehru Colony police station on Wednesday morning. The car involved in the accident was impounded too. The accused was sent to judicial custody as the offense is bailable, said Nehru Colony police station in-charge Vinod Singh Gusain. The condition of the seriously injured boy was still critical, he added.
He further said that the police team formed to investigate the case conducted thorough investigation and reviewed the CCTV footages. “The probe confirmed that the driver of a car owned by Narendra Singh was responsible for the accident,” he said.
Eyewitness had informed the police soon after the accident occurred that the car bearing the number UK07AE-0123 was of Divyani Singh, wife of Khanpur MlA Champion. However, the probe that followed found the car bearing the particular number belonging to Narendra Singh, father of Champion. Investigation further revealed that driver Shankit had gone to ISBT to drop his relatives on Wednesday morning. While returning from ISBT, the driver had the car ramming into the boy. Police said that the accident occurred because of over-speeding. The incident is learnt to have occurred at around 6.30 am on Matamandir Road, one and half km away from Nehru Colony police station. The injured boy had been rushed to CMI Hospital from where he had been later referred to a higher centre, given his deteriorating condition. His condition was still critical till the time this report was being filed.
