‘Strike by lawyers delaying justice’

Published on:

Hearing on a public interest litigation filed against the strike by lawyers in the courts of Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts, the High Court has asked the petitioner to provide a list of advocates who are also practicing in the high court.

The court acknowledged that the strike by lawyers is preventing petitioners from getting justice on time. Further, such strike by the lawyers is also contempt of Supreme Court order, observed the division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice NS Dhanik. The petition will be taken up for hearing next on Monday.

Dehradun resident Ishwar Shandilya had filed the PIL stating that the bar association in Dehradun has been on strike every Saturday for 34 years. This is hampering progression of judicial works and preventing petitioners from securing justice on time.

By observing strike every Saturday, the lawyers have turned it into a non-working day. It will be recalled that in the past, the division bench had sought details of strike by bar associations during 2018 from the district judges of Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar.
