‘Road traffic accidents have assumed epidemic proportions’

Published on:

According to national data, approximately five lakh road traffic accidents occur in India every year. One and a half lakh people are being killed in these accidents. But, these numbers are under-reported due to poor management of these patients by police, medical and social system. Such accidents have assumed epidemic proportions in the country, said Dr BKS Sanjay. He was speaking at a programme held to mark the 20th year of the DIT University in Dehradun.

Dr Sanjay who has about 40 years of experience in dealing with road traffic accidents emphasised that many children are becoming orphans, young married ladies are becoming widows and many parents are becoming dependent to others due to road traffic accidents. It may seem that only one individual is dying in these accidents but the fact is that the whole society suffers indirectly.

He informed that his lecture at DIT University was part of a campaign by him and his team having already delivered 109 public awareness lectures from different platforms. Expressing his views, Dr Gaurav Sanjay focused on the impact of road traffic accidents and also showed the measures to prevent these major road traffic accidents. The public should learn the traffic rules and follow them while the government should educate and enforce these traffic rules, he said.
