A week after six-year-old Mehram Sandhu’s body was found in Mohali’s dumping ground, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Friday announced to bear all the expenses of family’s legal fight to put the culprits behind bars.
SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, who visited the bereaved family in its Mohali residence, also announced that Mehram’s mother would be given job at Mohali’s Gurdwara Amb Sahib.
Makkar also announced that a paath would be conducted in Amb Sahib Gurdwara for Mehram, and “Rs1 lakh as compensation would be offered to Mehram’s family on the day paath would be concluded”.
Australia-born Mehram was allegedly kidnapped from Mohali’s Phase IX on October 28 when he was playing in a park near her house. Mehram’s mutilated body was found in Mohali on November 7. Mehram’s mother Harinder Kaur had suspected that her in-laws have abducted the child as she is in a matrimonial dispute with her husband.
The police had booked four members of his paternal family, including his father Varinder Pal Singh, in this connection.
Mehram’s mother had alleged that a few hours before her child went missing, she received a call from her husband who hurled abuses at her and said he would take his son back. Harinder also said her family was getting threatening calls from her in-laws.
Harinder said that she married Varinderpal Singh in 2007 and they went to Australia thereafter. Mehram was born on December 5, 2008, in Sydney. Six months after his birth, Harinder came back to India along with her son.
Expressing condolences with the family, Makkar also talked to Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police asking him to arrest the murders at the earliest so that justice be given to Mehram’s family.
