To keep inter-State traffic congestion at bay, the UT Administration has proposed to construct Western and Eastern bypass.
A bypass road has been proposed connecting the Ambala-Chandigarh highway via Daria Village. The UT Administration has also proposed a fast carriageway from Chandigarh to Mullanpur via Dhanas. The UT Finance-cum- Engineering Secretary VK Singh said that the UT Administration will construct Western and Eastern bypass. These would be constructed via Mullanpur and via Daria village. The existing road along Patiala Ki Rao is being widened so that it serves as a bypass to city’s Madhya Marg via the rehabilitation colony in Maloya, Dadu Majra Colony and Dhanas.
He said, “Also there is a proposal to widen the existing road of railways starting from Madhya Marg to meet at RUB road in Mauli Jagran to ease the traffic and to take care of to and fro passes of existing traffic coming from Zirarpur and adjoining area to IT Park and Panchkula and Manimajra town.”
The Engineering Secretary said that the Engineering Department has taken a number of projects for upgradation of roads to take care of heavy flow of vehicular traffic in the city. In one of these projects, Engineering Department for the last six months has taken up the work of construction of Road under Bridge (RuB) in collaboration with the Railway Authority of India.
“The main responsibility of the Railway authorities was to construct RCC box under the rail track and the same is almost complete which contains two boxes of size 10.9 mtr x 6 mts to cater three lane dual carriageway along with two another boxes of size 3 mtr x 5 mtr each for slow moving traffic such as cycle traffic and pedestrian on smooth gradient. The work of approaches to bridge which is responsibility of the UT Administration, has also been taken in hand in addition to widening of existing four-lane carriageway to six-lane starting from Hallomajra Chowk to UT Chandigarh boundary meeting at Industrial area Panchkula passing under this,” he added.
To ease the traffic problem between Chandigarh-Panchkula and nearby areas and to replace level crossing by constructing Railway over bridges (ROBs), construction of ROB near railway station for connecting Chandigarh to Sector 17 and 18 of Panchkula via Railway Colony Mauli Jagran was proposed, he added.
Notably, hundreds of vehicles from adjoining areas take the main artery on a daily basis, taking hours to reach their destinations in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The major junctions including Press Chowk light point, Kisan Bhawan Chowk, Piccadilly Chowk, Transport Chowk, and Industrial Area phases I and II, Sectors 29 and 30 roundabout and Matka Chowk witness high traffic congestion everyday.
