Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi on Tuesday said that a reward will be given to the innovative village, which attains a balanced sex ratio. Besides, District Commissioner or Ambassadors of the campaign will also be suitably rewarded by the Union Government, said the Union Minister while addressing the two-day National Thematic Workshop on Woman and Child Development.
The workshop is being organised prior to the launch of the national programme Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao at Panipat by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22. Gandhi urged the State Governments, district commissioners and other functionaries to work in tandem for the success of ‘Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao’ programme and report the innovative programmes and initiatives taken by them which would be sent to the Prime Minister for review.
She said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the scheme in his Independence Day speech and chosen Haryana to kick-off the campaign as it was one of the states with declining female sex ratio. Gandhi emphasised to look for innovative solutions to end violence and crime against women and end the dowry system which was the root cause of female foeticide.
She also expressed concern over the fact that out of 46 per cent children affected of malnutrition in the country about 70 per cent of them were girl child. She said that after assuming the office as Minister she emphasised on strengthening the National Commission of Women and on 33 per cent reservation for females in the police force.
