UT's water woes far from over: BJP

Chandigarh BJP on Thursday alleged that city’s Mayor Subhash Chawla is making false statements regarding restoring water supply to the city soon as the repair of damaged pipelines is expected to take 4-5 days more to complete.

A delegation of BJP led by its state president Sanjay Tandon visited the site of damaged pipelines of Kajauli waterworks on Thursday and took stock of the situation.

After talking to the Municipal Corporation officials present at the site, Tandon said that it will take 4-5 days time to repair the damaged pipelines at Kajauli waterworks. "Mayor Subhash Chawla is making false claims that the water supply to the city will be restored by Saturday, he said.

Tandon said that the city residents have been facing water shortage for a week now after pipelines at Kajauli waterworks – city’s primary source of water were damaged. Yet, the MCC has failed to ensure any alternative water supply to the city.

From past one week, the water supply to Chandigarh has been affected with most areas receiving water at low pressure during morning and evening hours. The residents living on upper floors are worst affected.

Tandon accompanied with BJP councillors alleged that Congress run MCC has failed to act wisely during the ongoing water crisis in the city and residents are bearing the brunt due to this.

The BJP also demanded that adequate numbers of water tanks should be sent to the areas affected due to water crisis in the city.

“The MCC should make adequate alternate arrangement for water supply in sectors affected due to water crisis, demanded BJP.

From Kajauli, Chandigarh gets 67 MGD water out of its total supply of 87 against a demand of 116 MGD. SAS Nagar gets 10 MGD from Kajauli as part of its total supply of 15.2 MGD.

Due to ongoing repair at Kajauli waterworks, the MCC has reduced water supply to two hours each in morning and evening in some of the sectors of the city.
