About 450 guest teachers in the Union Territory of Chandigarh refused to celebrate teachers’ day and organised a protested against UT Administration on Thursday.
On one side when the city was witnessing celebration of the Teachers’ Day at Tagore Theatre by awarding the teachers of government schools, almost 450 guest teachers who refused to celebrate this day organized a protest in the city.
Rajbir Samdhyan, president of the Guest Teachers’ Union said that the union strongly feels that the Education Department is giving them a step-mother treatment. The Education Department’s officers stated that they place the contractual teachers and the guest teachers on the same footing but why is it that the contractual teachers are remunerated better than the guest teachers.
Till September 7, 2012 the salaries of both the contractual as well as the guest teachers was Rs 15000. But the salaries of the contractual teachers have been hiked to Rs 26900 whereas the guest teachers are still being paid Rs 15000. The DEO, DPI and the Education Department have many times promised to address the situation but have done absolutely nothing about it.
Samdhyan also said that there are about 450 guest teachers who are still being paid the lower salary despite holding the same position and doing the same work. The Guest Teachers Union will strengthen itself to fight for its demands against the administration.
