After failing to get required equipment to conduct a survey, the UT Administration has sought assistance of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to provide the equipment for identification of residential and institutional structures falling in the proposed metro rail route, which needs to be demolished.

The survey will be conducted by the UT Engineering Department.

The UT Administration had constituted a team headed by a sub-divisional engineer in February to conduct the survey but the survey could not kicked off due to lack of required electrical tools for conducting accurate measurements.

The survey will assist the UT to ascertain the exact number of structures which needs to be demolished for the construction of metro rail route in the city.

DMRC in the detailed project report (DPR) of tricity metro has proposed that a total of 35.25 hectares of land including 32.52 hectares of Government land and 2.73 hectares of private land would be acquired for the project.

The land will be acquired for metro stations, depots, running sections and to create other infrastructure for functioning of metro here. Also, as much as 6.4 hectares of land would be required for temporary acquisition.

For the project, residential land in Sector 21, 34, 43 and Air Force Station has been proposed to be acquired.

The DPR has also stated that as many as 79 families would be affected in the land acquisition process.

Of these, 74 families are title holder private land owners or tenants while five families are owners of kiosks occupying the footpath.

The UT Administration has already completed the physical demarcation of the metro rail route in the city.

UT Finance-cum-Urban Planning Secretary, VK Singh said, “The UT Administration has sought assistance of the DMRC to provide the electrical tools required to conduct the survey.”

He added, “The survey would be conducted to identify the structures in the city which needs to be demolished for the proposed metro rail track in the city.”

The proposed north-south metro corridor in Chandigarh will constitute 8.04 km underground and 4.43 km elevated track and the east-west corridor has a proposed length of 6.04 km underground track and 19.04 km of elevated track.

The process of demarcation of metro rail route is yet to begin in satellite townships of Panchkula and Mohali.

The total project cost including land cost and taxes of the metro project will be Rs 10,900 crore in the first phase.

It includes development of metro project in Chandigarh portion costing Rs 8,245 crore, Rs 1,427 crore in

Punjab portion and Rs 1,228 crore in Haryana portion. Punjab will have a total track length of 7.8 km and Haryana will have a total track length of 6.41 km running through its territory.

A high-level meeting of UT senior officials with senior functionaries of Punjab and Haryana governments is likely to be convened under the Union Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD).

During next month they will take significant decisions regarding the ambitious tricity metro project.
