As many as 40 cases of dengue have been reported in Chandigarh till October 17. There was a surge in the number of cases after the recent rains in the city but according to the data provided by the UT Health Department, the number of cases has receded in 2013 as compared to 2012.

With the upcoming high risk season for transmission of vector borne diseases, the Malaria Wing of UT Health Department has geared up field activities for prevention and control of malaria and dengue.

Around 100 patients with dengue fever have visited Government Medical College, Sector-32, 15 dengue cases have been reported from Government Multi-Speciality Hospital Sector-16 and nine cases from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. However, out of this most patients are from outskirts of the city.

As the reports for the cases are received from the laboratories confirming the dengue cases, a home visit is made by the health workers. Spray operations and anti-larval activities are conducted in the area to stop further transmission of the disease, said S K Bhalla, UT Director Health Services.

A meeting in this regard was called by Director, Health Services, on Wednesday morning. Where, it was decided that as a part of the preventive measures by the Department, intensive cooler checks and other breeding points are being checked by the health workers from the areas which are being supervised by the supervisors and monitored by the Department. The numbers of dengue cases reported from Chandigarh in 2012 were 158, but this number has come down to 40 patients, this year. This shows that the city residents along with the Health Department has become aware of this vector borne disease and are taking all the precautions to keep the disease at bay.
