UT allows STA to register commercial vehicles

The UT Administration has decided to allow State Transport Authority (STA) here to register and collect taxes from commercial vehicle operators.

The decision will reduce the burden on Registering and licensing Authority (RlA) which is registering the commercial vehicles besides other vehicles here. It is already been dealing with the huge pendency of RCs of various vehicles.

At present, the commercial vehicle owners had to go through the long procedure of getting fitness certificate in STA office in Sector 18 and getting registered and pay taxes of vehicles in the RlA office  in Sector 17.

In a meeting held under the chairmanship of UT Home Secretary Anil Kumar on Friday, it was decided to allow STA to register commercial vehicles from now onwards. Under the powers conferred in Chandigarh Motor Vehicles Rules 1990 Chapter-IV Registration of Motor Vehicles Section 65(2), the UT Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shayin has authorized the STA to register all types of commercial vehicles in the jurisdiction of union territory of Chandigarh. It was a long pending demand of school bus operators, truck operators and other commercial vehicle operators for allowing STA for registration and tax collection.

A UT spokesperson said, “All the operators of commercial vehicles are hereby informed that henceforth all the work relating to commercial vehicles will be carried out in the office of STA behind Government Press, Sector-18”.
