Despite the limited land available in Chandigarh, the UT Administration on Thursday decided to allot more land to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Panjab University (PU) to meet their future requirements.

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil in a meeting with PGIMER Director Dr Yogesh Chawla, PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Arun K Grover and senior UT officials gave approval to allot land to both these institutions.

Patil said demand of these two institutions will be met on priority. Panjab University needs more than 100 acres of land to meet their demands while PGIMER needs nearly 150 acres of land.

PU presently has its own 550-acre campus spread in Sectors 14 and 25 of Chandigarh while PGIMER is located in Sector 12 here.

He said that the land will be given to PGIMER and PU on priority from the available pool of land with UT Administration.

During the meetings, Patil discussed the detailed requirement of land with both the institutions for their long term future requirements. He was apprised by both these institutions about the new needs and the activities which have been planned by PGIMER and PU.

Patil said that PGIMER and PU are the two premier institutions located in Chandigarh, which are catering to the needs of the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and some parts of Rajasthan & Uttar Pradesh.

He said that these institutions, which are recognized among the best institutions in the country and abroad should be developed in a manner which can meet the demands of future time, atleast 50 years. He said that they should use the areas according to their requirements and while doing so they will follow the norms prepared by the UT Administration.

The Administrator said that these institutions will give the price of the land as per the norms. With the development of these institutions, people living in Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and other adjoining states will be benefitted.

“The UT Administration has been asked to complete the formalities and prepare the Memorandum of Understanding to finalize this shortly without any delay,” added Patil.

The UT Administration has asked both institutions to build the compound wall around the area which was allotted to them.

The UT Administrator added that both the institutions should have the provisions of water harvesting, provide the facility of solar energy, build underground parking areas, and plant the trees in the areas according to their plans.
