Two Rajya Sabha seats from Haryana will fall vacant in August after the end of term of Union Ministers Birender Singh and Prabhu Suresh Prabhakar, both from BJP.

Singh and Prabhu were nominated by BJP for Rajya Sabha seats from Haryana in the year 2014.

Election Commission of India has published the schedule for biennial election to the Council of States to fill two seats to be vacated due to the retirement of Birender Singh and Suresh Prabhu, sitting Members of Rajya Sabha, on August 1, said Haryana Chief Electoral Officer, Vijay Singh Dahiya.

He said that the Commission has appointed the Secretary and Joint Secretary, Haryana Vidhan Sabha as Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officer respectively for the Biennial Election.

The last date of making nominations would be May 31 and scrutiny of nominations would be held on June 1. Poll would be held in the old committee room of Haryana Vidhan Sabha Secretariat from 9 am to 4 pm on June 11.

Birender Singh is likely to be re-nominated to the upper House by BJP. The BJP can comfortably win one seat but would require the help of opposition to win the second seat.

Following the announcement of election, Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala on Tuesday said that BJP would win one seat comfortably. For the second seat, talks are on with the opposition parties, he said.

On the other hand, Haryana INlD president Ashok Arora said that a meeting of parliamentary board of the party has been called to discuss the election to Rajya Sabha. Name of the party candidate would be decided on approval by party supremo, Om Prakash Chautala, he said.
