Bollywood movies “Kyaa Super Cool Hain Hum” and “Mastizaade” had undergone hundreds of cuts before they were given ‘A’ certificate to come on the silver screen. This assertion was presented by the Assistant Solicitor General Chetan Mittal before Punjab and Haryana High Court on a petition seeking ban on obscenity in both the films.
As the petition came up for hearing before Justice Rajesh Bindal, Mittal submitted that “Kyaa Super Cool Hain Hum” was permitted to be released after 139 cuts and “Mastizaade” after applying 381 cuts.
He submitted that the producer voluntarily offered 107 cuts, while 32 cuts were suggested by the Censor Board in “Kyaa Super Cool Hain Hum”. In “Mastizaade”, the producer volunteered 349 cuts, while the Censor Board suggested 32.
The court was apprised of the fact that the contents and promos being shown on YouTube or internet were not examined by the Censor Board, as it has no control over the same. He further submitted that affidavit was being taken from the producer to ensure that the deleted content of the movie was not released in the promos.
The counsel added he would get the report from the Censor Board as to whether the promos being aired on internet had content deleted by the Censor Board. The court was also told that scenes found to contravene guidelines, such as double meaning dialogues, vulgar and obscene visuals, besides dialogues degrading woman in any manner were deleted after Censor Board examined the content.
The counsel sought time to produce guidelines on a movie’s approval before release. The case will come up for further hearing on Thursday.
In its petition, Raksha Jyoti Foundation had sought directions to be issued to the respondents to take the necessary steps to stop or ban the release of obscene scenes in the films. It had contended that the promos of such movies was clearly sending wrong message in the country and was causing bad effect on the tender minds and hearts.
“The release of the movies would create a shameful and embarrassing moment for families who decide to spend certain quality time by watching the television together. This sort of disgraceful situation at least presents itself everyday,” the petitioner added.
