Punjab Transport department has launched an e-governance project in all 22 districts of the State.

“The project, initiated for the first time in India by the transport department, is successful and has already been implemented in all districts,” said Punjab Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar.

Kohar said that with the introduction of the online project, the dependence of general public on officers has been minimised.

“Computerisation of transport department is not only restricted to one or two services but also included registration at dealers’ desk, online payment of fee and taxes, licenses at educational institutes, among others,” he added.

“With introduction of e-governance in transport department, Punjab has become the first State in the country to introduce smart card facility for driving licenses and certificates for registration of vehicles,” said Kohar. “Other facilities like learner’s license, web-based payment of taxes and fees, and an online system for vehicle registration at dealer point,” added Kohar.

He added that the department introduces “paperless office concept” in all its field offices by scanning of all the applicants’ documents.

Adding, Kohar said that the Governments of Uttarakhand and Odisha have appreciated the project and introducing the same in their respective States.

A team from Kenya also visited Punjab to study this project, added Kohar.
